In a strategic move to deepen AI differentiation and extend audience reach, Wix has just acquired Base44, an Israeli-based AI-powered software platform that enables users to create full-stack web applications through conversational interfaces, for $80  million.

This strategic acquisition directly supports Wix’s goal to empower non-developers (creators, solopreneurs, marketers, agencies) to build and launch powerful digital products. With Base44 under Wix's corporate umbrella, this goal evolves beyond website-building tools into full software creation. 

Founded in 2022 and headquartered in New York,  Base44 is a chat-based, AI-powered software development platform that lets users build full-stack web apps by chatting with an AI assistant. The AI platform is often described as "ChatGPT for software creation," with outputs ready for production, not just prototypes.

The deal promises significant enhancements for both user bases. Base44’s “vibe coding” lets users describe what they want in plain language, turning ideas into full-stack apps with no coding skills required. Wix has been slowly evolving from a website builder to an AI-native creation ecosystem, and Base44 helps Wix achieve that goal. The New York-based startup becomes the developer layer of that AI-native creation ecosystem, which will allow users to go beyond visuals and into logic, data, workflows, and integrations.
