An analysis of SK hynix's financial performance and HBM leadership, examining production capacity, customer concentration, long-term supply agreements, and its competitive position against Samsung Electronics and Micron as AI demand transforms the global memory semiconductor market.HBM has moved from a high-margin specialty product to the central driver of SK hynix’s earnings, capacity planning, and customer relationships. Record third-quarter 2026 results, long-term supply agreements covering more than half of 2027–2028 capacity, and the transition from HBM3E to HBM4 as the flagship product illustrate how deeply AI accelerator demand has reordered the company’s competitive position.
This company analysis examines the business segments, HBM product roadmap, manufacturing expansion, financial performance, competitive standing versus Samsung and Micron, customer concentration, and the principal risks that will determine whether the current profitability and demand visibility can be sustained.
1. Company Overview and Business Segments
SK hynix is a South Korea-based memory semiconductor manufacturer whose core businesses are DRAM (including high-bandwidth memory) and NAND flash. The company is dual-listed: ordinary shares on the Korea Exchange (000660.KS) and American Depositary Shares on Nasdaq (SKHY) following a July 2026 U.S. listing that raised approximately $26.5 billion.
Principal manufacturing sites include Icheon and Cheongju in Korea, with further capacity under development at the Yongin semiconductor cluster. Solidigm, the U.S. NAND/SSD subsidiary formed from the acquisition of Intel’s NAND business, remains wholly owned after SK hynix discontinued review of a potential Solidigm IPO in October 2026.
Business mix is dominated by DRAM (including HBM). NAND contributes through enterprise SSD and related products, with Solidigm providing additional data-center storage exposure.

2. DRAM, NAND and HBM Business
DRAM remains the primary revenue engine. Within DRAM, conventional server DDR5 and high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators have driven the sharp rise in average selling prices and margins. SK hynix is expanding output on its 10-nanometer-class sixth-generation (1c) process and increasing the share of high-value server products, including LPDDR5 SOCAMM for AI servers.
HBM is the highest-value segment. It is sold primarily under long-term agreements to hyperscalers and AI accelerator vendors. Customer requests for HBM currently exceed the company’s available supply by more than two times, according to management commentary on the Q3 2026 earnings call.
NAND benefits from enterprise SSD demand. Sales of 321-layer TLC eSSDs expanded in the third quarter, supporting sequential and year-over-year growth in the storage business, though DRAM/HBM remains the dominant profit contributor.
3. HBM3E and HBM4 Product Positioning
HBM3E was the workhorse product through much of 2025–mid-2026. In the third quarter of 2026, SK hynix began shipping HBM4 (12-high stacks) in volume according to schedules agreed with major customers, including platforms tied to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin architecture.
Management stated on the October 28, 2026 earnings call that HBM4 is expected to surpass HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue share in the fourth quarter of 2026, becoming the company’s flagship HBM product. Yields on HBM4 have exceeded internal targets, prompting an upward revision of yield goals. HBM3E mature yields have also surpassed original plans.
HBM4E (next generation) sample deliveries were completed in the second quarter of 2026; development and customer evaluation are described as progressing on schedule. Negotiations with major customers on 2027 HBM volumes and pricing have been finalized, with contract terms said to reflect the higher value of HBM4 relative to prior generations.
Distinction: Mass production and commercial shipments of HBM4 are underway. HBM4E remains in the sample/evaluation phase relative to full commercial ramp.
4. AI Accelerator and Hyperscaler Demand
Demand is concentrated among a limited set of hyperscalers and AI accelerator platforms. SK hynix has signed long-term agreements with 14 key customers, including major global cloud service providers. Existing LTAs already cover more than 50% of planned production capacity for both 2027 and 2028. Including volumes under active negotiation, management describes DRAM and HBM output as effectively sold out through 2029.
The company expects memory supply to remain tight relative to demand through 2030, driven in the near term by enterprise and consumer AI and in the longer term by physical AI applications (autonomous systems, robotics). Customer order volumes for HBM are stated to exceed twice the volume the company can currently supply.
5. Manufacturing Capacity and Expansion Plans
Near-term HBM4 capacity is being expanded primarily through the Cheongju M15X facility, which management expects to reach maximum production capacity by the end of 2026. Concurrently, the company is increasing the share of 1c-nanometer process output for conventional high-value DRAM.
Longer-term expansion centers on the Yongin semiconductor cluster, where the first fab is targeted for progressive ramp-up. Capital expenditure for 2027 is expected to rise significantly from 2026 levels, with investment size and timing calibrated to mid- to long-term demand visibility secured with customers. EUV process expansion at existing fabs is also part of the roadmap.
Confirmed near-term action: M15X ramp to max by year-end 2026. Yongin and broader CapEx figures remain subject to final board and customer-aligned decisions.
6. Competitive Position against Samsung and Micron
Counterpoint Research data for the second quarter of 2026 placed SK hynix at approximately 50% of global HBM revenue share, Samsung at 33%, and Micron at 18%. This represents a meaningful narrowing of SK hynix’s earlier lead (it held roughly 58–64% in prior quarters).
Independent estimates for the third quarter (Bernstein and others) suggest Samsung’s HBM revenue may have exceeded SK hynix’s in absolute dollar terms in Q3 2026, driven by a rapid HBM4 ramp. These figures are analyst estimates, not company-reported segment data, and should be treated as directional rather than definitive.
Samsung is leveraging vertical integration (memory, foundry, advanced packaging) and early HBM4 volume to close the gap. Micron remains the third supplier with a stable but smaller share. SK hynix’s response has been to lock multi-year LTA volumes, accelerate M15X, and emphasize yield and cost competitiveness on HBM4 while preparing HBM4E.
Leadership is no longer uncontested. Share and revenue rankings can shift quarter to quarter as HBM4 volumes scale across all three suppliers.
7. Financial Performance, Margins and Capital Expenditure
Third-quarter 2026 results (announced October 28, 2026):
Revenue — KRW 104.62 trillion (first quarter above 100 trillion; +32% QoQ, +328% YoY)
Operating profit — KRW 83.33 trillion (record; +38% QoQ, +632% YoY)
Operating margin — approximately 80%
Net profit — KRW 39.78 trillion (+216% YoY, –58% QoQ; affected by non-operating items including currency and investment-related effects)
The company plans shareholder returns of approximately KRW 100 trillion for fiscal 2026, including dividends and share acquisitions/cancellations. Net cash position has strengthened. CapEx for 2027 is expected to increase significantly year-over-year to support advanced-node mix, Yongin ramp, and infrastructure.
Source: SK hynix official Q3 2026 results release and earnings call, October 28, 2026. Operating margins at these levels are exceptional for a manufacturing business and reflect both ASP strength and high HBM mix.
8. Customer Concentration and Supply Agreements
Fourteen long-term agreements with key customers, including major cloud service providers, now underpin more than half of 2027–2028 capacity. Management intends to maintain a similar proportion of mid- to long-term LTAs. Contract structures include mechanisms (such as deposits) that improve volume and pricing visibility.
Concentration risk remains material: a limited number of hyperscalers and AI platform vendors account for the bulk of high-value HBM demand. Any significant change in a major customer’s architecture, volume plans, or dual-sourcing strategy would affect utilization and pricing power. Conversely, the LTA structure reduces the historical cyclicality that characterized commodity DRAM.
9. Competitive Advantages and Technology Roadmap
Advantages — Early and sustained HBM process leadership; high yields on current-generation stacks; deep LTA relationships with leading AI customers; ability to convert process leadership into multi-year volume commitments; strong cash generation supporting both CapEx and shareholder returns.
Roadmap — Near-term focus on maximizing HBM4 output and cost at M15X; continued 1c DRAM mix shift; HBM4E qualification and ramp in line with customer schedules; Yongin fab as the next major capacity node; EUV expansion at existing sites.
Advantages are process- and relationship-based rather than permanent structural barriers. Competitors are investing heavily to close the gap on HBM4 and HBM4E.
10. Growth Opportunities, Risks and Strategic Outlook
Opportunities — Sustained AI accelerator demand through the decade; pricing power while supply remains constrained; mix shift toward higher-value HBM and server DRAM; potential for HBM4E and subsequent generations to extend leadership if yield and cost advantages hold; cash generation that funds both capacity and returns.
Risks — Competitive share gains by Samsung (and to a lesser extent Micron) on HBM4; customer concentration and possible dual-sourcing or stack-height changes by major buyers; execution risk on Yongin and other large CapEx projects; cyclical downturn if AI infrastructure investment slows; geopolitical and export-control constraints on equipment and technology; currency and non-operating volatility affecting net income.
Outlook — Management’s stated view is that demand will exceed supply through 2030 and that high profitability, well above prior-cycle peaks, can remain sustainable under current LTA and pricing structures. Independent verification of that trajectory will depend on actual HBM4/HBM4E volumes, competitive share trends, and the pace of customer CapEx in AI infrastructure.
Key Questions to Monitor
1. Does HBM4 maintain yield, cost, and volume leadership as Samsung and Micron scale their own HBM4 output?
2. How durable are the 14 LTAs if major customers adjust stack configurations or dual-source more aggressively?
3. What is the actual 2027 CapEx envelope and the timeline for meaningful Yongin output?
4. Will HBM4E qualification and pricing sustain the profitability gap versus conventional DRAM?
5. How does the competitive revenue and share ranking evolve once full-year 2026 and early 2027 HBM4 volumes are reported by all three suppliers?
