Segments.ai specializes in producing high-quality training data crucial for machine learning. Its platform enables annotation across complex data sources — including LiDAR (3D point clouds), radar, images, and video — and supports advanced features such as segmentation, sensor fusion, projection of annotations, automation, and active learning. These capabilities are particularly valuable in robotics and autonomous driving, where precision and scale are essential. The company was founded in early 2020, and it's currently based in Leuven, Belgium, with a remote workforce in Palo Alto, California.
By integrating Segments.ai’s technology, Uber aims to accelerate internal autonomy initiatives and expand external offerings under Uber AI Solutions, its umbrella service for AI-driven innovation. The acquisition reflects Uber’s broader strategy to evolve beyond mobility and logistics into adjacent domains where artificial intelligence is a critical enabler.
Founded in 2009 and headquartered in San Francisco, Uber is best known for transforming the transportation industry through its ride-hailing platform. Over time, the company has diversified with services such as UberX, Uber Eats, and Uber Freight, while investing heavily in frontier technologies, including autonomous vehicles and AI infrastructure. The addition of Segments.ai further positions Uber to lead in delivering accurate, scalable AI solutions across multiple industries.
