American Express has announced a proposed $700 million all-cash acquisition of TheFork, a leading European restaurant reservation and management platform, from travel giant Tripadvisor. The transaction, expected to close before the end of 2026, remains subject to labor consultation and regulatory approvals.

Founded in 1850 and headquartered in New York, American Express built its brand on trust, security, and nearly two centuries of innovation. What began as a freight forwarding company has since evolved into one of the world's most recognized financial institutions, known today for its premium credit cards, payment processing, and travel-related services. In recent years, dining has become an increasingly central pillar of its strategy to deepen cardholder loyalty and set itself apart in an intensely competitive payments landscape.
The TheFork deal is the latest — and largest — chapter in that dining push. American Express previously acquired restaurant reservation platform Resy in 2019, then Tock, a reservation, table, and event management technology provider, in 2024. Together, the three platforms are expected to expand American Express's global dining network to 75,000 bookable venues.
At the heart of the deal is TheFork itself. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Paris, the platform has grown into one of Europe's largest restaurant reservation networks, connecting millions of diners with more than 50,000 restaurants across 11 countries. Beyond reservations, TheFork provides restaurants with guest engagement tools, operational software, and customer relationship management solutions. The company has generated roughly $232 million in revenues over the past 12 months.
For Tripadvisor, the sale marks a strategic pivot. The US-based online travel company, best known for its travel reviews and booking services, said the transaction highlights the value of its portfolio while freeing up financial flexibility to focus on its faster-growing experiences business — including tours and activities.
Following the closing, TheFork will continue to operate under its existing leadership team, benefiting from the global reach and powerful backing of American Express.
