Sequoia-backed Tecton Joins Forces with Databricks in Key Acquisition for AI Expansion

Databricks, a global leader in data and AI solutions, announced it will acquire Tecton, a fast-growing machine learning startup backed by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. The deal, first reported by Reuters, underscores Databricks’ strategy to expand its enterprise AI portfolio, though financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 2020 by the former Uber engineers behind Michelangelo—Uber’s pioneering machine learning platform—Tecton has become a key player in real-time data orchestration. Its technology helps enterprises transform raw, streaming data into actionable machine learning features, enabling AI systems to respond with speed, accuracy, and scale.

The acquisition directly supports Databricks’ push into Agent Bricks, its platform for building enterprise-ready AI agents. By integrating Tecton’s feature management expertise, Databricks aims to deliver AI systems with sub-second responsiveness, a capability increasingly vital for voice interfaces, fraud detection, personalization, and other interactive applications.

“Bringing Tecton’s cutting-edge technology and talent under Databricks's corporate umbrella allows the US tech firm to push the boundaries of real-time AI,” the company said in a statement. “Enterprises are demanding faster, more reliable AI platforms, and together we’re making that possible.”

The deal also highlights Databricks’ broader strategy of rapid expansion through innovation and acquisition. In recent years, the company has snapped up MosaicML, Tabular, Neon, and other AI-focused startups, cementing its position as one of the most ambitious players in the enterprise AI arms race.

Founded in 2013 by the creators of Apache Spark at UC Berkeley, Databricks is best known for pioneering the data lakehouse, a cloud-native architecture that combines the flexibility of data lakes with the reliability of data warehouses. Alongside its commercial platform, Databricks maintains widely used open-source projects including Delta Lake and MLflow, serving thousands of organizations worldwide.
